Concebido inicialmente como un autorretrato, Arlequín con espejo combina varios personajes del mundo circense y de la Commedia dell´arte por los que Picasso se sentía fascinado e identificado a la vez: Arlequín, con su sombrero de dos picos, un acróbata por su vestimenta y Pierrot por su rostro que, convertido en una máscara, camufla la identida.

The model is Muscovite Léonide Massine (1896-1979), dancer and choreographer of the Ballets Russes company since Diaghilev hired him to replace Vaslav Nijinsky as principal dancer in 1913. Transfiguring Massine into "Harlequin", Picasso once again delved into the iconography of this chameleonic character from the commedia dell'arte.
